Santa Rosa Beach is the most misunderstood name on this coast. Visitors hear it and picture a single beach; it is actually an enormous unincorporated stretch of Walton County that reaches from the shoreline at Dune Allen all the way north to Choctawhatchee Bay, wrapping thousands of acres of Point Washington State Forest along the way.
Our address sits inside that spread, which is why it is our shortest drive and our longest one at the same time. A morning can start at a bayfront home shaded by live oaks at Point Washington and finish at Gulf Place with the surf audible from the driveway, and the two garages will have almost nothing in common.
Exposure changes every mile you travel here. Down at the shoreline, hardware lives in salt spray. Three miles north under the forest canopy the enemy is not salt but standing humidity — air that never dries out, sitting on steel all summer. On the bay at Point Washington you get brackish damp from behind the house as well as in front of it. Because we are based in the middle of all three, our truck carries galvanized and coated hardware for every one of them instead of whatever suits an average.

We take bay-side and forest-side appointments in the cool part of the morning, save the shoreline for later when the beach traffic on 30A has thinned, and route around Eden Gardens rather than through it in high season. Living inside the territory is the difference between an arrival window we can keep and one we can only hope for.
